A couple of weeks ago I was very fortunate to be invited to the launch of a new studio in Benoni, South Africa. The owner, photographer Tiago Nazareth, had converted a large double garage with high ceilings into a stunning studio with a huge infinity curve. The venue has an unexpected bonus in that the gardens around the house offer any more setups for location style portraiture.
Along with the many talented photographers invited were professional models, make up artists and several assistants. We photographers were spoilt! I want to thank Tiago and his family for opening the studio and their home to us, to Steve Jordaan for the invite and to the models, Marizan and Jaime and my fantastic assistants Lerissa and Kristine.
I made photos of Marizan in a more conventional, fashion/glamour style. I haven’t made these kind of images in a long time so when the chance came to shoot with Jaime I was more relaxed and reverted to my documentary style of making images. We turned the music up in studio, I turned to Jaime and said ‘BOUNCE!’ I think you’ll like the result.
It was the first time I’ve shot with HSS (High Speed Sync) and we made a few test images under a shower head to show the potential of freezing water in mid air.
All shot settings are below the images. All images made with my favorite Fujifilm XPro2 and 23mm f2 & 50mm f2 lenses. (one extra made with the Samyang 8mm Fisheye)
Here is a small sample of the wonderful images we managed to make on the day.
